Chris Jones, chief executive officer of J. Walter Thompson Worldwide in New York, added the title of chairman. At the same time, former chairman Burt Manning, who formally retired in December 1997, was named chairman emeritus.
Bates USA in New York signed Arthur Tatnell as senior vice president and director of media information and technologies, a new position. Most recently, Tatnell was business development manager of Gruner + Jahr’s Parents and Child magazines. Bates Worldwide also elected Ian Smith to the new post of international president. Smith, former managing director of George Patterson Bates in Australia, is charged with building new business activities in the multinational packaged-goods category.
Steve Ratti, former director of new business development at Margeotes/Fertitta + Partners in New York, assumed the newly created position of director of agency marketing at Posnick & Kolker Advertising in New York.
Merkley Newman Harty in New York appointed Blake Callaway media strategist. Callaway was previously employed at Anderson & Lembke.
Steve Cowles, formerly vice president and associate creative director, progressed to group creative director at McCann Relationship Marketing in New York. Prior to joining the staff of MRM in 1995, Cowles spent 10 years at Ogilvy & Mather Direct.
People in New York hired Amy Andrews as director of sales development. Andrews comes to the magazine from Zenith Media Services, where she was executive vice president in charge of print activities. She also worked at Saatchi & Saatchi.
Robert Sullivan was named vice president of the local and News 12 ad sales divisions at Rainbow Advertising Sales Corp., a unit of Rainbow Media Holdings in Woodbury.
The Famous Music Publishing Cos., a division of Viacom’s Paramount Pictures in New York, promoted Mary Beth Roberts to vice president of catalog development.
Andrew Vogel, senior account executive at Newday Communications, stepped into the same role at Diamond Promotion Group in New York.
At the Book-of-the-Month Club, a division of Time Inc. in New York, Richard Schnabel advanced to executive vice president and chief operating officer, and Nancy Clifford, Deedie Domenicali, Derek Reicherter and Anet Sirna-Bruder were awarded senior vice presidencies.
Bob Sarlin, most recently president of Sarlin & Sarlin Ink, joined the staff of New York-based Charron, Schwartz & Partners as senior vice president and creative director.
Wine Enthusiast in New York selected Gabrielle Saylor Northeast regional and European sales manager. Previously, Saylor was vice president at Holt, Hughes & Stamell in Portland, Maine.
CONNECTICUT
Marketing 1 to 1/Peppers & Rogers Group in Stamford appointed Bruce Kasanoff head of its new training division. Kasanoff has been a partner at the company since 1996. Trish Watson, a former managing director at Bell Atlantic, became general manager of the firm.
PENNSYLVANIA
Earle Palmer Brown in Philadelphia installed Brad Arthur as senior vice president. Arthur, most recently vice president and group account director at FCB Canada, will oversee the agency’s automotive and insurance business.
Edward Keane, formerly with FCB Philadelphia, and Julie Ann Schipper, previously with Bozell Worldwide in Philadelphia, joined VirTu Inc., a Philadelphia-based company specializing in new media, as strategic creative director and account manager, respectively.
