A NEW YORK Mark Avnet was named chief technology officer at Lot21. Most recently director of production and technology of APL Digital, Avnet will head up Lot21's New York-based Development Lab division. John Castellani has been appointed by Burson-Marsteller USA to the new position of managing director. Castellani, a former executive vice president at Tenneco, reports to Joseph Fisher, CEO of Burson-Masteller USA. Gotham has hired three new staffers. Jonathan Stinnett was appointed vice president/account director, with responsibilities for day-to-day activities on PlanetRx.com, Global Crossing and Knight Securities; before joining the New York shop, he was a manager on the MCI Worldcom account at Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG. Philip Balshi has joined the agency as executive vice president/group creative director; he was previously a regional creative director at Young & Rubicam, handling Citibank Global and Fisher Price. And Mark Dixon was named associate creative director, working on such accounts as Global Crossing and Fidelity's Powerstreet; most recently, he was creative director at Club Med. Advertising, technology and media veteran Bruce Benson has been named CEO of iWeb, a Net startup that provides enabling technologies and services for Web advertising. Prior to joining the New York company, which also has offices in London and Israel, Benson was executive vice president of corporate strategy and technology at Young & Rubicam in New York. TheStreet.com, New York, named Tish Williams senior writer. She will write the "Tish on Tech" column, focusing on the personalities of the Silicon Valley technology community. Williams joins TheStreet from Upside Media, where she was host of the Upside Today site and a senior columnist for Upside magazine. Peter Steigrad has become chairman of Young & Rubicam's advertising operations in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as chairman and CEO of Dentsu Young & Rubicam, an 18-year-old joint venture. He will work out of Y&R offices in Singapore and Sydney, Australia. He assumes duties previously held by Etienne Boisrond, who was chairman of Y&R Inc. Asia-Pacific. Boisrond is returning to his native France to take a six-month sabbatical. Steigrad, who formerly was chairman and CEO of Y&R Australia and New Zealand, will continue to oversee offices in those countries. Grey Advertising in New York has appointed Jan Sneed senior vice president, director of corporate affairs. She replaces the recently departed Owen Dougherty, who is now at J. Walter Thompson. Sneed, who will supervise media relations and corporate communications for the global agency, reports directly to Grey chairman, president and CEO Ed Meyer. Sneed joined Grey from TBWA Worldwide, New York, where she was senior vice president, corporate communications worldwide. She has held similar positions at the former Wells Rich Greene BDDP and the former Benton & Bowles. She began her career as an account executive for Peter Martin Associates. A CONNECTICUT Digital Idea in Westport has hired two new staffers. Patti McKinley was named managing director of client services; she was most recently vice president of brand planning and research at Grey Advertising. Peter Propp was appointed managing director, technology and implementation; he was most recently at IBM as worldwide business development manager, IBM WebSphere Software. A PENNSYLVANIA Flashpoint-DBC Advertising, a division of Diccicco Battista Communications, has promoted Allison Schiding to senior copywriter. She joined the Horsham agency in 1999 as copywriter. Signature Communications has hired four new staffers. Megan Farina has joined the Philadelphia agency as art director; most recently, she worked at lighting company Angelo Brothers. Erin Kramer was named an account services manager; she was previously a listings editor at TVSM. Kevin Donlon has arrived as an account executive, whose primary responsibilities are servicing A.P. Orleans Builders and Developers; he formerly managed the marketing materials department at Toll Brothers. And Susan Posternock was appointed an editorial assistant; she was previously the staff writer and investigative reporter at The Paper in Grand Rapids, Mich. Elkman/Alexander & Partners, located in Philadelphia, has hired two new staffers. Michele Cancelliere was named art director; she was most recently an interactive designer at Power Design. Diane Culp has arrived at the shop as media assistant; she was most recently an assistant at television station WB17 Philadelphia, in the sales and marketing department
