Holland Mark's Davenport Gets Top Billing as First Employee
BOSTON--The former creative- services manager at Holland Mark Martin Edmunds has joined Modernista! as its first employee.
Mary Davenport has been named chief operating officer at the fledgling shop co-founded by former Arnold Communications copywriter Lance Jensen and designer Gary Koepke. Davenport had worked with Jensen at Arnold, where she was an art buyer prior to joining Holland Mark four years ago.
At Holland Mark, Sarah Davis has taken over for Davenport as director of creative services. Davis (unrelated to CEO Bill Davis) will also continue as head of the agency's studio and traffic departments until a replacement is found.
At Modernista!, Davenport finds herself juggling the demands of starting a business. In between answering the phone and dealing with a contractor who is transforming the shop's raw space at 109 Kingston Street into an office, she is also preparing pitches.
Modernista! is the only East Coast finalist for the $1-3 million Airwalk account. Select Resources International in Los Angeles is conducting a review for the Denver-based footwear maker.
Agencies competing for the account against Modernista! are Barnhart/CMI in Denver; Bozell in Seattle; Bulldog Drummond in San Diego; Odiorne Wilde Narraway & Partners, San Francisco. The account had been handled by Lambesis in Del Mar., Calif., for the last six years; the shop is not participating in the review.
Modernista! also is among the shops pitching Gomez Advisors in Lincoln, Mass., which Deutsch Boston dropped out of late last week (see related item in "Hotline," page 10).
Jensen is a former copywriter who helped land and build the VW business during his last five years at Arnold.
Jensen united with Koepke to open what the duo billed as the first agency of the new millennium [Adweek, Jan. 10].
