NEW YORK MindShare North America has hired David Adelman for the newly created position of chief marketing officer.

New York-based Adelman previously served as media director at Johnson & Johnson's global marketing group, where he focused on increasing digital marketing efforts and introducing communications planning processes to the company's over-the-counter medicines, pharmaceuticals and medical devices businesses.

J&J was a major MindShare client before the agency withdrew from the company's global media review in the spring.

In his new position, Adelman will work towards optimizing new business development, manage internal and external communications and help guide research and development to help guide the future of the WPP Group company.

Commenting on his new role, Adelman said, "We take a more strategic look at growing the business," he said.

Scott Neslund, agency CEO, to whom Adelman reports, said in a statement: "His combination of agency and client experience provides us with a unique and valuable perspective that I am confident will help MindShare successfully manage and overcome the challenges posed by the current marketplace."

Prior to joining J&J, Adelman led the emerging practice at Mediaedge:cia, a Mindshare sister company under GroupM. While there, he launched some of the industry's first interactive TV advertising tests with clients such as Sears, GSK and TD Waterhouse. He got his start in the industry doing media research at WPP agency Young & Rubicam.
