CHICAGO McLeod USA has awarded its advertising account, estimated at up to $40 million, to J. Walter Thompson in New York, sources said.

The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, company provides local and long-distance phone service in 23 midwestern and Western States. It has restructured since coming out of bankruptcy in April, shedding cable operations and a publishing unit.

Recent ad spending has been minimal but agencies were told the company could be spending in the $30-40 million range, sources said.
