Hires FCB's Topolewski as Creative Chief
SAN FRANCISCO--Gary Topolewski, an FCB Worldwide veteran best known for his work on Jeep, is coming to San Francisco as executive vice president and chief creative officer at McCann Erickson/A&L.
Topolewski, 42, replaces Steve Sweitzer, who left McCann recently after heading creative efforts on the $300-350 million Microsoft business. Topolewski moves here from his position as chief creative officer at FCB's Southfield, Mich., office.
The appointment is the latest in a string of senior-level management changes at McCann. The agency recently also hired two senior account planners.
Topolewski last week said he was drawn to the West Coast by the rapidly changing Internet business environment and the explosion of the San Francisco ad industry.
"I wouldn't do any other job if it wasn't something like this," he said. "Microsoft was just something that was really attractive. This was something I just couldn't turn down."
Topolewski said it is too early to say whether he will initiate any major changes in McCann's creative department. He added, though, that he was impressed with its recent Windows 2000 campaign and familiar with the office's other creative efforts.
Topolewski will start his new job in mid-April.
McCann/A&L chairman Barrie Hedge said Topolewski represents another piece of the puzzle in building a dynamic management team at McCann. "The place is filled with opportunity. ... We should be able to bring people into such a great situation," he said.
