ATLANTA The Martin Agency has resigned the Champion Mortgage account. Billings for the home equity lender were estimated at $12 million for 2001, and $16 million for January-October 2002, per CMR.
As a result of the move, the Interpublic Group agency has laid off 19 staffers, 14 in Richmond, Va. headquarters and five in New York, about six percent of its workforce.
Martin, the client's first agency, won the account in January, 2001 following a review.
Campaigns for Champion included television, radio, print and direct mail under the tagline "Champion says yes."
A representative from Martin declined to say why the agency resigned the account. "It was a tough thing to do because it affected people," said Dean Jarrett, agency spokesman. "But it terms of looking forward, it was the right thing to do."
