Americans are famously religious—or, depending on your taste in such matters, notoriously religious. Indeed, polling consistently shows people in this country more engaged by religious belief than are their counterparts elsewhere in the developed world. But this masks the fact that there’s a large constituency of Americans who seldom if ever darken the door of a house of worship. In a poll by The Barna Group, which regularly tracks Americans’ religious beliefs and practices, 33 percent of adults fell into the “unchurched” classification.
