It takes more than the threat of recession to keep Americans at home. In a Deloitte & Touche poll, 75 percent said they plan to spend “at least as much on leisure travel in the coming year as they did in the past year.” Vacationing is increasingly a self-expressive activity, as opposed to a merely recreational one. Thus, 26 percent said they’d like to (or already do) engage in “volunteer travel,” in which they “would do good while being away.”
