As social issues go, immigration is the dog that hasn’t yet barked—or, at least, hasn’t barked very insistently. The vast scale of immigration in recent years has raised some concern, but it hasn’t prompted a majority of Americans to favor barring the gates. In a new Gallup poll, half the respondents said immigration should be kept at its present level (34 percent) or increased (16 percent); 46 percent said it should be decreased. This is a slight dip in the “decreased” tally since last June, when 49 percent expressed that preference.
