NEW YORK Donald A. Macdonald, founder of the American Advertising Federation and vice chairman emeritus of Dow Jones & Co., died Friday night. He was 83.

Macdonald began working for the Dow Jones as an advertising sales representative in New York in 1953. He rose through a number of advertising-management and executive positions and was elected a director of Dow Jones in 1977 and vice chairman in 1979.

He also served as president and publisher of the company’s international and magazine groups, spearheading the launch of publications such as The Asian Wall Street Journal in 1976 and The Wall Street Journal Europe in 1983.
