If it’s true that a drink a day helps ward off heart disease, then health authorities must be concerned about the epidemic levels of teetotalism in the U.S. The chart here draws on a poll by Zogby International for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. You’ll note that fewer than one adult in 10 gets the semi-recommended dose of alcohol. (Due to rounding, the chart’s total pokes above 100 percent.) As you’d guess, men have an above-average proclivity for tossing back more than a drink or two per day.
