Young & Rubicam’s new AT&T spot about a Vietnam veteran captured the heart of rock legend David Crosby, but it took more than a year to convince the client to air it.
In the ad’s story of a young serviceman taking leave to visit the Vietnam countryside where his father fought, the New York agency used the 1969 Crosby, Stills & Nash song “Long Time Gone.”
After seeing a preview of the ad directed by Joe Pytka (shown here), Crosby dashed off a letter to the agency to tell them the spot blew him away and he was willing to do whatever he could to help get it on the air, according to sources.
