Levenson Public Relations here named a veteran public relations executive to direct a specialty group focusing on the telecommunications and high-tech fields.
Joe McNamara, who was executive vice president and general manager of Edelman Public Relations' Dallas office until June 1997, last month was appointed executive director of client services at Levenson PR--sister company to ad agency Levenson & Hill--after working on several projects with the shop. McNamara is a longtime acquaintance of Levenson PR chief executive officer Stan Levenson.
"When he left Edelman, we were doing some projects and programs together," said Levenson. "When we hit an opportunity to reassess our direction and where we wanted to go, we recognized telecommunications and high tech as [categories] we wanted to explore."
McNamara, who has been running a Dallas consultancy, draws on nearly 20 years of corporate and governmental affairs experience at Southwestern Bell, AT&T and MCI.
"I think a strength that Stan and I conceive for that market," said McNamara, "is that while there's some good shops in town, there's not a lot of deep expertise in that area."
McNamara's telecommunications background predates the Ma Bell breakup, when he worked as Southwestern Bell's chief spokesperson in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He later moved to AT&T to help that company's public relations unit formulate strategy for a competitive environment. McNamara also worked as a legislative liaison for the long-distance carrier coalition of AT&T, MCI, LDDS and others when Texas was drafting its Telecommunications Act in 1995.
