Wendy Melillo’s article [IQ Report, Nov. 8] might have been titled “Private Lives, Public Data.” The Internet as a customer database development tool is the ultimate evolution of the local general store.
In those bygone times, it was common practice to keep a notebook of the consumer wants and needs of every family in the village, as well as a credit ledger of their expenses. This allowed the storeowner to buy desired items in bulk and to project annual purchases that would have to be made in the coming year.
