Kornhauser, N.Y. Adman, Dies at 73

NEW YORK Henry Kornhauser, an adman for 50 years and originator of the claim "Four out of five dentists recommend Trident," died yesterday after a 10-month struggle with the progressive neurological disease myasthenia gravis. He was 73.

Kornhauser was born in 1932 in Vienna, Austria, son of George and Erna Kornhauser. When Germany invaded that city in 1938, the family escaped to the United States. He was raised in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan and attended City College at night.

Kornhauser began his advertising career in the mailroom of the Katz Agency in New York, and later became an account executive at shops including Ted Bates and Cunningham & Walsh. He was president of Dusenberry Ruriani & Kornhauser during the early 1970s and eventually held the same post at Clyne Dusenberry and Kornhauser & Calene.

As an account executive on Trident gum, he unearthed the research that showed "Four out of five dentists recommend Trident for their patients who chew gum." He also helped create the Black Flag Roach Motel and its slogan, "Roaches check in, but they don't check out," and worked on Ronald Regan's 1980 presidential campaign.

Kornhauser retired in December 2004.

His wife Judi, sons Rick and Steven, daughter Edith, as well as three stepdaughters, Janine, Lori and Catherine, survive him.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 1-3 p.m. at the Neubaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94, Blairstown, N.J.
