Ricki Kohn is going home again.
The veteran West Coast media maven who began her career in the Bay Area is joining Western Initiative Media Worldwide as vice president and general manager of its San Francisco office, sources said. Last month, Kohn resigned her post as senior vice president/group account director on the Sony Pictures Entertainment business at McCann-Erickson's Los Angeles office [Adweek, Jan. 24].
Western executives declined to comment on the appointment, but Kohn takes command of an office in a booming region of the country.
"San Francisco is a colossally important market these days," said a source. "They are the center of the high-tech storm. For Western to have someone with Kohn's level of experience is a great asset."
Kohn has accumulated a considerable body of experience in a variety of categories, including the Big Three on the West Coast: movie studios, Asian automobile manufacturers and high-tech companies. She was the first media director on the Lexus account when Team One Advertising launched Toyota's luxury car line a decade ago, and also spent time at Campbell-Ewald, Los Angeles, and Foote, Cone & Belding and Ketchum Advertising, both San Francisco.
Western's Northern California office handles an estimated $300 million in billings through direct and ad agency clients, including Stuart Anderson's Black Angus.
Kohn takes over a sizable Western presence that employs almost 100 people. She replaces Joy McBride, who left late last year to join KSL Media.
