NEW YORK Second-quarter revenue for Knight Ridder Digital rose nearly 51 percent to $29 million from $19.3 million in the same period a year earlier.

The Knight Ridder Internet unit, which develops and manages the newspaper publisher's Web sites including the Akron Beacon Journal's Ohio.com and the Lexington Herald-Leader's Kentucky.com, posted Q2 operating income of $9.7 million, versus $3.4 million in the year-ago quarter.

The results were released as a part of Knight Ridder's second-quarter earnings report. Overall, the San Jose, Calif.-based company reported total operating revenue of $760.2 million in the quarter, up 2.2 percent from $744 million in Q2 2003; its net income totaled $86.3 million, an 11.7 percent improvement over $77.2 million during the same time last year.

Last week, New York Times Digital, which includes NYTimes.com and Boston.com, reported that its revenue increased 36.2 percent to $21.3 million from $15.6 million in the year-ago quarter. Its parent, The New York Times Co., attributed the healthy performance to growth in display advertising and in classified ad categories.
