NEW YORK The Microsoft marketing executive heading the software giant’s attempted challenge of Google left the company unexpectedly Tuesday.

Martin Taylor, a 13-year veteran of the Redmond, Wash.-based company, had been appointed in March to lead the marketing of Windows Live.

“We have made the difficult decision to part ways with Martin, but we don’t comment on personnel matters,” a company representative said in a statement. “We appreciate Martin’s contributions at Microsoft over the past 13 years.”
