NEW YORK — More than 41 million people used at least one of the four major instant messaging applications during the month of May, according to the latest report from Nielsen/NetRatings. That number represents nearly 40 percent of the active Internet surfing population.

In addition, nearly 12.6 million office workers, or 31 percent of total at-work Internet surfers, used instant messaging during the same time period.

More than 22 million, or 21 percent of the at-home population, used AOL Instant Messenger, while nearly 15.7
