Intel Asks for More Info in $300 Mil. Review

NEW YORK The three contenders for Intel's $300 million account have each been asked for additional information from the client's procurement team after executives postponed a scheduled conference call for yesterday afternoon, sources said.

Client chief marketing officer Eric Kim was scheduled to call top executives of the three holding company teams on Tuesday afternoon, though sources said they did not know the nature of the call. Some surmised that a decision had been reached.

Instead, Intel postponed the call without giving a reason, and sources said the client asked the teams to submit additional information such as who would work on the business, how much of their time would be devoted to it and how much it would cost.

Interpublic Group's team was led by McCann WorldGroup, which was considered the front-runner after its "People Love Technology" concept got an enthusiastic reception from Intel sales staffers in mid-February. In its final presentation on Feb. 22, the IPG team got a subdued reaction from Intel executives, sources said.

DDB presented last on Feb. 23, sources said.

The other two finalists are teams from Omnicom Group, spearheaded by DDB, and WPP Group, led by Berlin Cameron/Red Cell and Young & Rubicam. Client executives were more responsive to the latter team's presentation on Feb. 23, sources said, asking many questions and joking with presenters.

Sources said the teams must supply the information before week's end.

Team executives either could not be reached or declined to comment. Select Resources International in Santa Monica, Calif., is the consultant handling the review. Neither SRI nor Intel executives returned calls for comment.
