The House of Representatives on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a bill to increase penalties for broadcast indecency nearly twentyfold. The bill raises the maximum possible fine for a violation to $500,000, up from $27,500, and exposes entertainers to the same possible penalty as broadcasters. It also requires regulators to consider revoking broadcast licenses after a third indecency offense. The Senate has not yet acted on its version of an indecency bill. The Bush administration has said it supports indecency legislation.
