MATHIESEN JOINS GOLDBERG MOSER O’NEILL
SAN FRANCISCO-J. Craig Mathiesen, former president of Ketchum Advertising, Los Angeles, starts work today at Goldberg Moser O’Neill, San Francisco, as executive vice president and director of account management for all of GMO’s clients. Ketchum handled American Honda Motor Co.’s $125 million Acura luxury division business until the end of 1996. Mathiesen’s “special focus” at GMO will be the Kia Motors business, according to chief executive officer Fred Goldberg.
SILICON GRAPHICS TRIMS LIST; MCCANN STILL ALIVE
SAN FRANCISCO-Grey Advertising in Los Angeles and incumbent CKS Partners in Cupertino, Calif., have been eliminated from the review for Silicon Graphics’ $40 million account, following a round of final presentations, sources said. Still believed to be in contention are Arnold Communications in Boston and McCann-Erickson in San Francisco. The client may take another week or more, and possibly hold further presentations or meetings, before choosing a shop, sources said.
GOODBY SCORES CRACKER JACK, BREAKS BELL WORK
SAN FRANCISCO-Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, has been selected to handle Frito-Lay’s estimated $10 million Cracker Jack ad account. The client and agency were in final negotiations last week. Frito-Lay acquired the brand from Borden, Inc., Columbus, Ohio, late last year. Other contenders for the account were Jordan, McGrath, Case & Taylor in New York and Suissa Miller in Los Angeles. Separately, Goodby this week breaks a new campaign for Southwestern Bell promoting the client’s mobile calling card product. The spots feature the tagline, “Southwestern Bell. Your friendly neighborhood global communications company.”
SAATCHI BREAKS NEW H-P ADS
SAN FRANCISCO-Saatchi & Saatchi here broke a new TV campaign last week for Hewlett-Packard, Palo Alto, Calif. The two spots promote H-P’s role as an “e-business” provider and feature the tagline, “Expanding possibilities,” which was developed by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners for H-P’s TV branding campaign last fall.
REVIEWS ROUNDUP. . . HARDEE’S TAPS ANGOTTI
Hardee’s Food Systems awarded the creative portion of its $80 million account to Angotti, Thomas, Hedge in New York. . . Fox Family Channel is believed to be close to choosing an agency for its estimated $12-15 million account. WongDoody, Seattle, was dropped from the contender list last week, according to sources. Foote, Cone & Belding, Los Angeles, dropped out a few weeks ago. The other contenders are J. Walter Thompson, Los Angeles, and two undisclosed shops. . . Hal Riney & Partners, San Francisco, was awarded an estimated $3-5 million ad account from Kali SportsNaturals, Berkeley, Calif., for the client’s Clif Bar brand. . . Lambesis in Del Mar, Calif., won the Skyy Spirits account after a review that included Black Rocket and Kirshenbaum, Bond & Partners West, both San Francisco. Billings are estimated at $4-5 million.
