O'Dea Joins Weber at IPG Marketing Group
BOSTON—Kelly O'Dea has stepped down as president of Foote, Cone & Belding to assist Interpublic Group's Advanced Marketing Services Group form a "strategic marketing-consulting" practice, said Larry Weber, CEO of AMS. O'Dea does not have a specific title or client responsibilities at the Cambridge, Mass.-based IPG arm that provides public relations, relationship marketing and related services. Rather, O'Dea will remain based in New York, working closely with Weber to "explore all options" on how AMS can become a player in the consulting field, including growing a practice or buying an existing company, Weber said. O'Dea and Weber will forge that strategy during "the next few quarters," Weber said. IPG also owns FCB.
Havas Issues Bonds to Back Purchases
BOSTON—French holding company Havas last week made a $320 million bond issue on the Paris stock exchange. The company said it will be used at least partly to fund acquisitions through its three global networks: Arnold, Boston; Euro RSCG, New York; and Media Planning Group, Barcelona. The networks are expected to acquire small and midsize shops, mainly in Latin America, Europe and Asia. No major U.S. buys are planned.
Priceline Breaks With Hill, Holliday
BOSTON—Priceline.com has split with Interpublic Group's Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos. Priceline representative Brian Ek said the Norwalk, Conn.-based discount-travel-ticket site has pulled its account in-house, a move that was anticipated, as the company's recent radio ads (starring pitchman William Shatner and tagged, "I think, therefore I save") were produced by the client itself. Hill, Holliday's New York office had worked with Priceline since 1999. Client ad spending has fallen in recent years, down from more than $90 million during the dot-com frenzy of 2000 to $40 million in 2001, according to CMR. The client has spent about $4 million so far in 2002.
ILog Selects Philip Johnson for Ads
BOSTON—ILog has hired Philip Johnson Associates following a review of undisclosed agencies. The French business-software company, with U.S. operations in Mountain View, Calif., will work with PJA's office in San Francisco. Efforts will likely target corporate decision makers and appear mainly in trade and business publications. Spending was not disclosed.
BOSTON—CGN Marketing & Creative Services has picked up chores for Blackboard, a Washington, D.C.-based software company. Spending is in the six-figure range. ... BBL Communications, Acton, Mass., has relaunched Clipper, the in-flight magazine of Pan American Airways, with the May/June issue. For July/August, an insert program lets advertisers attach catalogs, CDs and pamphlets. ... Polese Clancy, a Boston shop, added work from three biotech companies: Curis, Cambridge, Mass.; Indevus Pharmaceuticals, Lexington, Mass.; and Oxigene, Watertown, Mass.
