NationsBank Initiates Consolidation Review
DALLAS--The pending merger of NationsBank and Bank of America has opened a review of roster and non-roster shops for what insiders believe will be a consolidated $85 million account. Sources said incumbents Temerlin McClain, Deutsch and GSD&M began receiving questionnaires last week, along with other undisclosed agencies. Client and agency executives declined to comment. Temerlin, Irving, Texas, is agency of record for NationsBank. Deutsch, New York and Marina del Ray, Calif., handles creative and print media buying for Bank of America, while GSD&M, Austin, Texas, is responsible for BofA's broadcast buying. The merger is expected to close Oct. 1.
Thrifty Car Rental Cuts Agency Search to 12
DALLAS--Thrifty Car Rental, Tulsa, Okla., last week selected 12 undisclosed agencies for the second phase in its $10 million review, according to sources. Insiders said Thrifty is concentrating on Midwest and Southwest shops. Client officials did not return calls. Thrifty's consultant, Advertising Agency Register in New York, is requesting additional materials, due this week. Four to six finalists are expected to be chosen July 28. Presentations will take place in August.
GSD&M's Southwest Ads to Feature Berman
NEW YORK--Official National Football League carrier Southwest Airlines has inked ESPN impresario Chris Berman as talent for television, print, radio and point-of-purchase messages supporting a "Take Your Team to the Super Bowl" sweepstakes. The contest offers a trip to Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami to the winner and 10 guests. TV creative from Southwest Airlines ad agency GSD&M, Austin, Texas, will appear in October and November on ABC and ESPN, where Southwest has made a large media buy. The Marquee Group, New York, represents Berman.
Global Household Hires New York Help
NEW YORK--Global Household Brands has assigned creative duties for its Carpet Fresh, 2000 Flushes and X-14 brands to Downtown Creative Partners, New York, the company said. Western International Media, New York, was tapped for media planning and buying. Both agencies were named following a review of unidentified contenders. The client said a "significant increase in spending" will support the brands, which last year registered $2 million in expenditures, per Competitive Media Reporting. Publicis, Dallas, previously handled X-14 creative tasks.
Wheeler Lands Independence RV of Florida
DALLAS--Wheeler Advertising, Arlington, Texas, was awarded marketing chores for Independence RV, a Winter Garden, Fla.-based recreational vehicle dealership. The agency's tasks will include media buying, direct mail, plus broadcast and print production. Billings were undisclosed. Wheeler specializes in advertising and public relations for RV dealerships.
