GPC Buys McDermott/O'Neill
BOSTON--GPC International, a global public affairs and strategic consulting firm in Toronto owned by Omnicom Group, has made its first move into the U.S. market by acquiring McDermott/O'Neill & Associates. Terms of the deal were undisclosed. The public affairs specialist, which employs 53 and has offices in Boston, Providence, R.I., and Washington, D.C., has been renamed GPC/O'Neill & Associates. Agency principal Thomas O'Neill, named CEO of GPC's U.S. operations, said he plans to build the firm's Washington office and lead GPC/O'Neill's expansion through organic growth and acquisitions.
Polaroid Breaks Ads as Stock Plummets
BOSTON--Polaroid Corp. has launched a series of seven TV commercials--created by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco--touting its new camera and film products. The first spot, "Joy to the World," supports the Cambridge, Mass.-based company's JoyCam and shows young people at parties, dances and in food-fights. The spots, which will roll out through December on teen- and young-adult-oriented shows, close with the line, "Whatever brings you joy." The long-troubled imaging giant saw its stock price fall 13 percent on Thursday to slightly more than $22 when it announced that fourth-quarter profits would be less than predicted due to increased ad expenditures. The company spends $100 million on ads worldwide.
N.Y. Times Co. to Buy 'Worcester Telegram'
BOSTON--The New York Times Co. last week agreed to buy the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the third-largest daily newspaper in the Bay State. The Times Co., which also owns The Boston Globe, will pay $295 million for the 107,000-circulation paper, which has been owned since 1986 by the Chronicle Publishing Co. in San Francisco. Fidelity Investments' Community Newspaper Co., Needham, Mass., which owns more than 100 local papers in Massachusetts, including the daily Middlesex News, Framingham, Mass., may also have bid for the Telegram & Gazette, according to press reports.
