Mullen Moves Nelson Up the Ladder
BOSTON--Mullen in Wenham, Mass., has promoted Ted Nelson to executive vice president, director of account planning. He joined the agency in 1996 from Anderson & Lembke in New York as senior vice president, director of account planning. Nelson's account responsibilities include General Motors Certified Used Vehicles, The Stanley Works and Agfa.
Clarke Goward Goes Online
BOSTON--Clarke Goward here has formed an interactive media unit called interactive clarke goward. James Alvord, the agency's director of interactive services for three years, will head the new division and oversee three employees. New media work has already begun for clients such as The Boston Harbor Hotel, PMS Escape, InterNutria Sports and Mauna La'i Tropicals.
Weekly Newspaper to Launch
BOSTON--Community Newspaper Co. in Concord, Mass., will publish the first edition of The Reading Advocate on April 2. The weekly newspaper is free to subscribers and 75 cents on newsstands. The advertising rate is $12 per column inch, according to publisher Mark O'Neil, who estimated that 40 percent of the newspaper's 70 pages would be slotted for advertisers. A circulation of 8,653 is guaranteed for the first four weeks, O'Neil said. Fidelity-owned Community Newspapers publishes more than 100 local papers in the suburbs north and west of Boston.
Local Television Spending Up
BOSTON--Money spent on local television advertising increased by 5 percent last year, while spot TV spending was up by 3 percent, according to figures released by the Television Bureau of Advertising in New York. CMR MediaWatch supplied the estimates. Last year's top advertisers on local TV included McDonalds, Best Buy, Sears Roebuck & Co. and Dayton Hudson.
Conn. Tourism Group Names Marketing Director
BOSTON--The Greater Hartford Tourism District has hired Paul Mayer as director of marketing and public relations. He will cultivate new public-private partnerships to promote the Hartford, Conn., area to tourists. Most recently, Mayer was director of marketing for the Crystal Mall, part of WellsPark Group, in Waterford, Conn. Mayer is an Emmy award-winning producer of tourism and broadcast videos.
Homeless Kids Organization Seeks Designer
BOSTON--The Horizons Initiative, a nonprofit organization for homeless children, is seeking a graphic designer to do pro bono work. Projects would include newsletters, invitations, direct mail executions and an annual report.
