Sun Microsystems Selects Lowe & Partners/SMSNEW YORK--Lowe & Partners/SMS here was named agency of record for Sun Microsystem's $60-70 million account on Friday. The win followed a review that also involved Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners here, TBWA Chiat/Day, Venice, Calif., and Ingalls Moranville Advertising, San Francisco. Sources said Kirshenbaum was eliminated prior to the final round because the agency and client could not agree on strategic direction. The other contenders proceeded to make creative presentations.Four As Honors BBDO, Richards, DeVitoAVENTURA, Fla.--The American Association of Advertising Agencies awarded the 1997 John O'Toole Advertiser Award to Little Caesars at its 79th annual meeting held last week at the Turnberry Isle Resort & Club here. The pizza chain was honored for its consistent excellence in advertising. Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York, is Little Caesars agency. Separately, BBDO in New York and The Richards Group in Dallas tied for top honors for the A+ Creative Award in the category of agencies with billings of more than $30 million. For agencies with billings of less than $30 million, DeVito/Verdi, New York, won for the third year in a row.Rumors Swirling Around Fate of CordiantNEW YORK--Cordiant PLC's board meets tomorrow amid feverish speculation that a major announcement is forthcoming. Last week, principal shareholder David Herro said he was surprised by Wednesday's exceptionally high activity of 20 million Cordiant ordinary shares traded in London. The surge comes amid a flurry of rumors about Cordiant. Scenarios included: a sale of Bates Worldwide, a management buyback at Saatchi & Saatchi and the departure of chairman Charles Scott to Adidas. All such speculation was denied by Cordiant. Said Herro: 'Yes, I heard reports Cordiant was talking to True North about selling Bates.' Herro said Cordiant chief executive Bob Seelert would only say that the company was looking to maximize shareholder value.Bomb Scare at Y&R Turns Out to Be False AlarmNEW YORK--The New York City Police Department's bomb squad unit removed a package fromYoung & Rubicam's New York headquarters on Friday that, when examined, was determined to contain wires, sources said. According to police, the basement and first floor of Y&R's 285 Madison Ave. offices were evacuated. In an internal memo, top management assured the staff the package was a promotional piece and not explosive. Y&R routinely X-rays packages since executive vice president Thomas Mosser was killed by a package bomb in 1994.Aamco Launches Agency ReviewNEW YORK--Aamco Transmissions has started a review for its $15-20 million creative account. The company has hired Advertising Agency Register to conduct a search.Aamco has handled its advertising in-house since it ended its relationship with now defunct Ally & Gargano.
