Bronner Expands With S.F. Spinoff, 2 Accounts
BOSTON--Bronner Slosberg Humphrey on Jan. 1 will launch a wholly owned subsidiary in San Francisco to handle clients Charles Schwab and L.A. Cellular. The tentative name of the 40-person spinoff, Sansome Group, is in the final stages of trademark checks but may be changed before the agency begins operation, according to Bronner Slosberg chief executive officer David Kenny. The subsidiary is being formed to avoid a "marginal conflict" between Schwab and American Express, which is handled in Bronner Slosberg's New York office, Kenny said. Bronner Slosberg executive vice president Reuben Hendell will serve as acting president of the new entity; longtime staffer Michael Jacobs becomes creative director. The spinoff will handle consumer and business-to-business direct marketing chores for L.A. Cellular; its tasks for Schwab include direct mail and telemarketing customer service.
Holland Mark Breaks S&P Ads
BOSTON--Holland Mark Martin Edmund here has fashioned a print-based branding campaign for Standard & Poor's designed to provide the New York-based ratings service with a unified global image. Three ads broke last week in domestic and overseas editions of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, BusinessWeek and other publications. "Before the steel. Before the cable. Before the concrete. A Standard & Poor's rating," reads one ad that shows a blueprint of a suspension bridge spanning an arctic fjord. "Before the wings. Before the engines. Before the flight. A Standard & Poor's rating," reads another ad that features an airplane schematic above a hilly countryside. Spending was not disclosed.
PNC Hires Arnold's Johnson
BOSTON--Denise Johnson has been named senior vice president, corporate marketing for PNC Bank in Pittsburgh. Johnson was most recently executive vice president and group account director at Boston-based Arnold Communications on the Fleet Financial Corp. account. She will report to PNC president James Rohr.
Days Inns, Amex to Offer Software
BOSTON--Days Inns of America is teaming up with American Express Corp. to offer travelers the choice of free educational or sports CD-ROMs when using the American Express card at any Days Inn hotel. The promotion was created by Decker in Glastonbury, Conn. In addition to radio spots and signage, print ads are running in USA Today, Time and U.S. News & World Report.
Hill, Holliday Debuts Another AMD Extravaganza
BOSTON--Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos here has unveiled a TV commercial for Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD. The spot, produced at a cost in excess of $1 million and directed by Michel Gondry, reveals a world called "FlatZone," where AMD's new K6-2 processor with 3DNow! technology turns a 2-D image into a 3-D likeness. The ad is running for seven weeks in Boston, New York, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
