4 FINALISTS TO PRESENT TO MAZDA LOS ANGELES-Mazda North American Operations will hear presentations from Ogilvy & Mather in Los Angeles; Deutsch in New York and Santa Monica, Calif.; W.B. Doner & Co. in Southfield, Mich.; and GSD&M in Austin, Texas, client officials announced last week. Each finalist will be asked to make a presentation to Mazda senior executives and representatives from its national dealer advisory council during the week of Oct. 13. A winner will be selected at the end of October. LEVI INTERACTIVE LAUNCHES SEARCH SAN FRANCISCO-Levi Strauss & Co.'s estimated $1 million interactive account has gone into review. The search follows the recent resignation of the business by Northern Lights Interactive here. Sources close to the agency said NLI executives were "fed up" with subsidiaries of ultimate parent True North Communications in Chicago trying to "move in" on the Levi's business. STARBUCKS PARTS WITH GMO, HIRES BBDO SAN FRANCISCO-Starbucks Coffee Co. in Seattle has moved its estimated $7-10 million national ad account to BBDO West, Los Angeles, after working with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners here for two years. Both sides parted on good terms publicly, but sources said "significant" creative differences caused the split. Design work for Starbucks will now be handled in-house. The company is seeking full-service agencies for regional assignments. REVIEWS ROUNDUP Frame-n-Lens in Fullerton, Calif., has named a list of Southern California contenders for its estimated $4 million ad account: Asher/Gould Advertising, Grey Advertising and Fotouhi Alonso Cameron, all in Los Angeles; Heil-Brice Retail Advertising in Newport Beach; Bozell Worldwide in Costa Mesa; The Persuasion Group in Venice; and Colby/Effler and Fraser/Young, both in Santa Monica . . . Hughes Family Markets in Irwindale, Calif., has awarded its estimated $5 million account to EvansGroup's Seattle office. ONWARD AND UPWARD Eric Roos of San Francisco's Black Rocket has left the agency to pursue other interests. He was director for the agency's Pete's Brewing Co. account. Black Rocket's general manager, John Yost, will oversee the account until Roos is replaced . . . Larry Tolpin, president and CEO of BBDO South, Atlanta, has been appointed worldwide creative director and CEO of J. Walter Thompson West in San Francisco . . . Ketchum Advertising, San Francisco, has hired Judy Young as media director. She comes to the agency from J. Walter Thompson, San Francisco, where she served as co-director of interactive . . . Tony Taylor has joined Bates USA West in Irvine, Calif., as senior vice president, director of client services. He will concentrate on the Hyundai Motor America business. Taylor previously worked on the Volvo Cars of North America account at Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG and Scali McCabe Sloves, both in New York.
