Goodby's Nike Work Twice Honored by APG
BOSTON--Goodby, Silverstein & Partners' strategy for the Nike women's basketball account won a gold medal in the third annual APG-U.S. account planning awards last week. The San Francisco-based agency was lauded for its "A Championship Season" campaign. TBWA Chiat/Day in Venice, Calif., took home the silver award for its "The Front" campaign for The Weather Channel. Goodby and Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, New York, tied for bronze honors. Kirshenbaum was lauded for its "Uncompromise" campaign for Rockport shoes, while Goodby won bronze for another Nike campaign, "What If " for Nike skateboarding.
Kraft Seen Naming 3 Promotions Agencies
CHICAGO--Kraft Foods will consolidate general-
market promotions responsibilities at three agencies, according to sources. Two roster shops--Davidson Marketing in Chicago and the Ryan Partnership, a unit of D.L. Ryan Cos. in Westport, Conn.--along with Frankel & Co. in Chicago were tapped as the preferred promotions agencies for Northfield, Ill.-based Kraft's units, sources said. An ethnic promotions shop also is expected to be named, while a separate review for a direct marketing/database agency is continuing. Kraft could not be reached for comment; executives of the three agencies declined comment or could not be reached.
Four Shops Vie to Handle Ballantine's Account
NEW YORK--The London offices of four agencies are vying to handle creative and media duties for Ballantine's scotch whiskey, yet another Allied Domecq brand in review [Adweek, June 22]. The finalists are: Saatchi & Saatchi, Bates Dorland, BBDO Worldwide and incumbent Publicis. The client could not be reached. Billings for the worldwide account were estimated at $30 million. Final pitches took place two weeks ago and a decision is expected in August.

McCann-Erickson in Los Angeles has been awarded all newspaper buying chores in major U.S. markets for Sony Pictures Entertainment. Billings for the business are $75 million, according to industry estimates. The shop has been picking up domestic Sony newspaper markets over the past year, and will assume media duties in the remaining regions in September Deutsch and TBWA Chiat/Day, both in New York, are the remaining contenders in the review for Barnes & Noble's estimated $35 million creative account. Another contender, Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, New York, withdrew due to a conflict. A decision is expected within a week. Incumbent Weiss, Whitten, Stagliano in New York is not participating in the review Apple & Eve has narrowed its review to two shops: Avrett, Free & Ginsberg in New York and Gearon Hoffman in Boston Mobil in Fairfax, Va., has started a review for its estimated $5-10 million Hispanic marketing account.
