America West Flies With 4 Finalists
LOS ANGELES--America West Airlines has narrowed its agency review to four finalists, according to DeWitt Helm of the consultancy Achenbaum Bogda Associates in New York. They are: The Richards Group, Dallas; Campbell Mithun Esty, Minneapolis; Hal Riney & Partners, San Francisco; and J. Walter Thompson West, San Francisco. The Phoenix-based airline is expected to make a decision by the end of November.
Daewoo Selects Leap Brand Strategy
CHICAGO--Daewoo Motor America said it has selected a "national brand platform and strategy" presented by The Leap Partnership here that will be used in all four regions. The automaker said in a statement that "this was not a presentation to select a 'national agency'" and that it remains committed to its regional marketing structure. Its three other regional agencies, which also presented strategies, are Ground Zero, Santa Monica, Calif.; Korey Kay & Partners, New York; and Tausche Martin Lonsdorf, Atlanta. No national advertising budget has been disclosed.
Nicklaus Golf Equipment Swings With Six
ATLANTA--Nicklaus Golf Equipment has selected a group of finalists for its estimated $5-6 million account, according to client director of marketing Andrew York. The finalists are BBDO South, Atlanta; GSD&M, Austin, Texas; Ground Zero, Santa Monica, Calif.; Leonard/Monahan, Providence, R.I.; Hollywood Cows, Orlando, Fla.; and Venue, Riviera Beach, Fla. Each of the six will meet with Nicklaus officials the first week of November, and the review will include spec creative.

Merkley Newman Harty in New York has been named the winner of the $12-15 million National Thoroughbred Racing Association account. Other contenders included BBDO South in Atlanta; The Richards Group in Dallas; and the Los Angeles office of D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles. . . Bio Foods, the maker of Balance nutrition bars, has retained Buckley/Friedman Advertising and Public Relations in Costa Mesa, Calif., as its agency of record. The shop competed against Los Angeles agency Suissa Miller for the estimated $9 million account, according to Lara Jackle, vice president of marketing for the Carpinteria, Calif.-based client.

D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles' Los Angeles office has made the following staff promotions: Ron Boyd to senior vice president, director of client services; Diane Dreyer to senior vice president, account group director; and Molly Dee Taylor to senior vice president, group media director. . . Chris Chalk is joining TBWA Chiat/Day in Venice, Calif., as director of planning. He previously was with Lowe Howard-Spink in London, where he was one of three planning directors. He replaces Adam Morgan, who left the Venice office earlier this year to take a post as head of planning at TBWA C/D in London.
