Herz Rises Quickly at TBWA\C\D

When Karin Herz joined TBWA\Chiat\Day as a receptionist in 1996, management knew immediately that the recent college graduate had great potential.

Herz, 26, has proven her worth by rising to the position of director of business development at the agency's Playa del Rey, Calif., office. Herz, who previously served as new-business manager, will report directly to chief marketing officer Laurie Coots.

"She was smarter than the average bear right away," said Coots. "She just loves the thrill of the hunt. She's another person, like me, who absolutely lives to pitch."

Herz, who assumed her new post last week, was a logical candidate for the position due to her success pitching clients such as Levi's and Kinko's, Coots added.

Herz also separated herself from the pack, Coots said, by contributing a bounty of ideas during strategy sessions and new-business pitches.

Herz attributes her success to a willingness to work long hours and take on extra duties. "It's a huge responsibility but at the same time an amazing opportunity to both impact the new-business process as well as shape the entire agency," she said. "We're constantly evolving. Now there's a big emphasis on business-to-business. I want to help the agency grow in that direction."

The L.A. native said she is also excited about continuing to work with the agency's top leadership and help position high-profile brands.

The last person to handle these specific duties was David Rogers, who held the title of new-business development director. Rogers left L.A. in 1997 for a stint at the agency's New York office and is now back in Playa del Rey as interactive business development director, North America.
