Forty years ago, David L. Weiner started Marketing Support as American Public Relations. The Chicago shop quickly diversified into a full-service agency and changed its name to reflect that.
It now specializes in packaging and promotions, with billings of $95 million and clients that include Elkay Manufacturing and Home Depot.
Weiner has enjoyed the ride. For many years, he played barroom piano at a bar on Clark Street. More recently, he has taken a stake in a West Side steakhouse.
Along the way, he has translated his interest in psychology into a couple of books, one of them called Battling the Inner Dummy: The Craziness of Apparently Normal People.
To celebrate the shop's 40th year, Marketing Support is offering 40 hours of pro-bono marketing work to 10 nonprofit organizations. The agency is providing help with public relations, Web design and marketing strategies.
Interested parties should contact the agency by May 30.
