GSD&M of Austin, Texas, was awarded best of show honors in Waco, Texas, Friday, at the annual awards ceremony of the 10th District of the American Advertising Federation.
The shop won for its "Da Da" television commercial for Southwestern Bell Cellular. GSD&M and four other entrants tied for first, each earning four Addys each.
The 76 Addy winners from the district show will advance to the national AAF competition June 20 in Minneapolis. The 10th District awards were held in conjunction with the regional AAF convention, hosted by the Advertising Club of Waco.
GSD&M was joined on the winner's podium by three agencies and a book publishing company: The Thompson Agency and Anderson Advertising, both of San Antonio; Cranford Johnson Robinson Woods of Little Rock, Ark; and Waco-based Terrace Publishing.
Terrace won Addys and a special judge's award for a series of poster and book cover entries promoting one of its titles: Intercourses: An Aphrodisiac Cookbook.
Print pieces for Pennzoil and television work for Southwest Airlines brought home the Addys for GSD&M. Anderson received accolades for ads it created for Ultramar Diamond Shamrock and Harvest Preschool Academy.
Thompson won multiple Addys for its Columbia 300 bowling ball client, in work that also received local best of show in February.
Cranford Johnson Robinson Woods scored with public service announcements aimed at stopping teen abuse of smokeless tobacco, plus an Alltell-sponsored ad for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Following the leaders with three Addy awards apiece were: Fogarty Klein & Partners in Houston; Bromley, Aguilar & Associates in San Antonio; and the Houston office of Ogilvy & Mather.
