NEW YORK -- The U.S. General Services Administration has awarded Web duties to Cordiant Communications Group's Bates and its interactive and direct-marketing sibling, 141 XM in New York.

Bates won the $930,000 contract after a review that included two other undisclosed agencies, according to a company representative.

GSA is a 53-year-old centralized federal procurement and property management agency that acquires, on behalf of federal agencies, office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services.

As a part of the assignment, Bates and 141 XM will redesign the GSA's Web site ( http://www.gsa.gov/ ) based on feedback from user surveys and other market research. The goal of the project is to simplify the organization of the site, focus on GSA products and services and provide information most requested by its customers, said M.J. Jameson, GSA associate administrator for citizen services and communications.

The Web site redesign is due to be complete in the third quarter of 2003.
