Places separating Jesus Christ and George Washington in a Harris Poll from a few years ago on Americans’ favorite heroes. Jesus came in at No. 1, George at No. 13. (In between were luminaries such as Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln and Michael Jordan.) Christ and Washington find themselves unlikely partners now, as both are appearing in a new print campaign that calls for a statewide death-penalty hiatus in North Carolina. One ad shows an image of Jesus next to the text, “Accidentally executing innocent people is the price society has to pay for justice.”
