As mysteries go, it wasn’t exactly along the lines of “Who killed J.R.?” But when cryptic messages began appearing in 2001 on billboards in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, people did ask questions: Who was making these statements? What did they mean? And most important, can we reject them as postmodern hogwash?

The jury is still out on the latter two questions, but the first has been answered: It is French artist Patrick Mimran who continues to shell out $3,000-5,000 a month for the space on 24th, 25th and 26th Streets.
