Freed Earns Broadcast Nod From Auchan

After the satisfactory completion of project assignments for the client, Houston-area shop Freed Advertising was appointed broadcast agency of record for a French-owned grocery and discount superstore.
Freed of Stafford, Texas, received the $1 million-plus business of Auchan Hypermarket of Houston after producing two television spots for both general and Hispanic markets, according to the agency.
"We were really pleased with the results we had for Auchan," said agency owner and president Gerald Freed.
The nine-year-old Auchan store in Houston is the only U.S. subsidiary of The Auchan Group of Croix, France, which owns and operates 200 locations worldwide.
David Mertins, advertising director for Auchan Hypermarket, said the store reviewed four local agencies before selecting Freed for the project work last summer. "We wanted to brand the store as a fun place that is communicated in our TV advertising," he said in a statement.
Freed developed a back-to-school campaign and an anniversary spot over the last several months, with the tagline, "Auchan. Where you can find just about anything to eat, drink, wear, watch or play with."
The 250,000-square-foot store, described by Freed creative director Tim Dillard as a cross between Wal-Mart and Dillard's Department Stores, sells a large number of different groceries, clothing and other goods. Dillard said the food operation, for instance, sells more than 600 types of cheese and over 250 varieties of mustard.
