The trace of FCB Worldwide that remains here was reduced further with the departure of the shop's largest remaining post-Chrysler client.
Consumers En-ergy, Michigan's largest utility, moved its $3 mil-lion business to McCann-Erickson in Troy, Mich., without a review after 10 years at FCB.
That news hit a week before layoffs at the Southfield, Mich., shop become official. About 300 of the office's 430 employees on Dec. 6 were given 60-days notice that they may be laid off. About 200 moved to PentaMark Worldwide or other agencies. For the rest, FCB has offered a severance package based on how many years worked at the company—roughly one week's pay for every year employed, according to sources.
FCB's remaining clients are Sunbeam-owned outdoor products man-ufacturer Coleman, which bills at about $2 million, Valassis/FSI and Arvin-Meritor.
Where those clients will be serviced remains in the air. The office is expected to close this summer, leaving about 50 employees with only a few options. They may be offered positions at True North Communications' Don Coleman Advertising in Southfield, although it has not been determined whether they would be grouped separately and retain the FCB name or whether they would simply be absorbed into DCA, sources said.
The remaining FCB accounts could be moved to that office and serviced there, sources said. There is also the possibility that the remaining staffers might come under the jurisdiction of another FCB office, but continue operating as a unit out of Detroit, sources said.
Ken Darish, chief financial officer, is currently heading what remains of the FCB office.
The Consumers corporate advertising account is expected to grow with the addition of a $12 million deregulation project in the next several years, sources said. Hanon McKendry, Grand Rapids, Mich., was assigned the consumer portion of the Consumers account, previously at FCB, earlier this year.
