ENGAGING ISSUE

After she was named one of the Windy City's most eligible singles in Chicago magazine last year, Birgit Wendt didn't have to go far or wait long to find a mate.

Wendt, an account supervisor at Leo Burnett, got engaged this spring to former Burnett copywriter and current freelancer John Wilson after a romance that began at a party honoring the magazine's featured singles. Wendt insisted the meeting was serendipitous. "I ended up with the one down the hall," she said. "I wasn't looking for it."

Wendt and Wilson had been working on the launch campaign for Hallmark Flowers when her picture appeared in the magazine. Wendt brought Wilson to the singles party for moral support, but suggested a date while they were there, saying she recognized something in their relationship that appeared worth pursuing. "We had a real honest thing from the getgo," she asserted.

Despite Wendt's joke that she dated "half the city" after the magazine came out, the relationship continued through the fall and winter. He proposed to her at his condominium in April and they plan to be married next winter or spring.
