After a five-month personnel search covering two continents, Eisner Communications looked within and promoted Stephen Etzine from group creative head to executive vice president and creative director.
Etzine replaces the Baltimore shop's previous executive creative director, Bill Mitchell, who left Eisner last September and has since opened his own agency.
"We looked at 33 portfolios and reels, from San Francisco to London," said agency principal Steve Eisner. "During our search, [Etzine] created several memorable campaigns for us. This guy has been stepping up month by month . . .[He] emerged as a leader and a believer that we can fulfill our dream to be a national agency."
Since last fall, Etzine has created new branding campaigns for clients Go RVing, the Maryland Lottery and Thingamajob.com.
Born in South Africa, Etzine, 43, first worked at a unit of Foote, Cone & Belding in Johannesburg. He also was at Ambrose Carr Linton Kelly in Toronto and Doner and The Campbell Group, both Baltimore.
Etzine said he was "surprised" by the decision, but "I've never [had] a sense of limitations about what I can do."
Eisner acknowledged that "the safer bet would be to find a big name. But the surer bet is to find someone whose best work is ahead and hungry as hell to prove it to the world. That's what we've got."
