As part of an effort to attract larger brands, dweck! has named Chad Kawalec to the new position of director of client services, ending a year-long search.
Kawalec, 37, was previously partner, global account director at Young & Rubicam in New York.
At dweck! in New York, where Kawalec began late last month, he will oversee day-to-day client activities and help obtain new business. He will also liaison with clients to help them better utilize the shop's services. Kawalec reports to founder and executive creative director Michael Dweck.
Dweck cited Kawalec's work at Y&R on accounts such as the U.S. Postal Service and the launch of V8 Splash as a reason he topped the 70-80 other candidates Dweck interviewed.
"[Kawalec] is strategically very strong and has big brand experience that we need," Dweck said. "He is able to take companies that nor mally aren't used to high gross and get them to produce brands in categories that grow."
For Kawalec, moving from WPP Group's Y&R after two-and-a-half years to a small independent shop with 17 staffers was an effort to be at an agency where he could "make a big difference.
"I was looking for someplace that didn't have a lot of bureaucracy … where the ideas generated were closer to purity when they got to their target," he said.
Dweck!, which claims $35 million in billings, lists among its accounts Seagram's Absolut Kurant, Goldman Sachs and Foodline.com.
Before Y&R, Kawalec was vp, account director at the former Ammirati Puris Lintas; prior to that, he was vp, management supervisor at Grey Worldwide, working on P&G's Crisco and Jiff Peanut Butter.
