BP Amoco in London is conducting a review for a new line of clean fuels that is likely to dominate its European ad spending, sources said.
The contenders for the business are Doner International, London--a unit of Doner in Southfield, Mich., which handles U.S. retail advertising for the BP brand--and M&C Saatchi, London, which handles BP's corporate advertising internationally.
The new products will be introduced only in Europe, sources said. Both Doner and M&C Saatchi presented ideas in London last Friday, sources said. Spending was undisclosed.
BP marketing officials in London could not be reached for comment. Doner and M&C Saatchi referred calls to the client.
The review is unrelated to the recent merger of British Petroleum and Amoco, sources said. Other sources indicated that a U.S. corporate image review is also under way, but Howard Miller, a BP Amoco representative in Chicago, denied that agencies are being contacted. He did acknowledge that the client is studying how to manage the brands. Leo Burnett, Chicago, the agency for Amoco, said it was not aware of any review. --with Aaron Baar
