Domino's Pizza appointed Ken Calwell to be its new evp, Build the Brand, the top marketing post at the No. 2 pizza chain. Calwell joins in mid-July from Wendy's International, where he was vp-new product marketing, research and testing.

Calwell replaces evp of International, J. Patrick Doyle, who served as interm evp, Build the Brand, since the post became vacant in December 2000 following the exit of Cheryl Bachelder to KFC. Calwell reports to Domino's CEO David Brandon.

Deutsch in New York has handled the estimated $100 million account since 1999.

In 2000, it developed the character "Bad Andy," an animated, mischievous monkey that appeared in its advertisements. The campaign was tagged, "Bad Andy, good pizza" and ran until March of this year when the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based client ordered a new campaign that downplayed Andy in favor of spots emphasizing Domino's delivery service and promotional entries such as its Roma Herb crust pizza. A new campaign tagged, "Get the door, it's Domino's" debuted in March.

Deutsch executives could not immediately be reached for comment.

While fast food players are grappling with higher costs, Domino's domestic same-store sales in May were up 4% over last year.
