“Discipline and long hours,” says Ron Tapia. These are the two things that the Marines and working in advertising have in common. And he should know, because he’s done both.

Raised in Flagstaff, Ariz., the 32-year-old art director joined the Marines right after high school and served for four years.

His work, ranging from a Payless ShoeSource campaign, about a “shoe freak” illustrated in Coney Island sideshow style, to a long-copy QVC ad, struck a chord with davidandgoliath in Los Angeles, where he has been freelancing since graduating in May.

“I loved his thinking,” says Jill Pool, creative services manager.
