DGA Names Smith Top Commercial Director

NEW YORK Baker Smith of Harvest Films in Santa Monica, Calif., took home the Directors Guild of America's award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials for 2002 at the 55th annual DGA show on Saturday.

Smith was nominated for work including "Black Bands" and "Visigoths" for Canal by Euro RSCG BETC in Paris, "Lightning" and "Wind" for Fox Sports by Cliff Freeman and Partners in New York and "Clown" for BMW's Mini Cooper by Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami. He was also nominated for the top award last year.

Other contenders for the award were Dante Ariola of Morton Jankel Zander in Los Angeles; Craig Gillespie, also of MJZ; Leslie Dektor of Dektor Film in Hollywood, Calif.; and Noam Murro of Biscuit Filmworks in Los Angeles.
