Deborah Cavanagh, former executive director of group marketing for Wenner Media, has joined GSD&M as vice president and director of new business.
In her new position, Cavanagh will be charged with prospecting and pitching new clients for the $1 billion Austin, Texas, agency. She will report to Alicia Kriese, senior vice president and director of business development.
Cavanagh will handle more of the day-to-day duties, while Kriese will oversee all business development, including existing clients' accounts, said a company spokeperson.
Prior to working at New York-based Wenner Media, Cavanagh was the associate publisher of Men's Health for four years. She has also worked at House & Garden, Condƒ Nast Traveler and Self magazines.
GSD&M recruited Cavanagh from one of its clients, having won the $5-10 million Wenner Media advertising account last summer.
"She brings a perspective that we didn't have, someone from the client side who has dealt with advertising and with client issues," said agency spokesperson Eric Webber.
"As a magazine publisher, Deborah has worked with some of the greatest brands in the world. Her experience and insight will be invaluable to our business development efforts," said Roy Spence, GSD&M president, in a statement.
Cavanagh's challenge will be to add more high-profile brands to a roster that already includes clients such as Southwest Airlines, Wal-Mart and SBC Communications.
