BOSTON — CVS, the nation’s No.1 pharmacy chain, has started contacting shops about its advertising account and appears to be gearing up for a full-blown review or agency switch, sources said.

The client in Woonsocket, R.I., is in the early stages of the process and as yet no timetable has been established, sources said. A CVS representative on Monday declined comment. Both creative and media chores will likely be evaluated, sources said.

The account has been with Bates, New York, for the past several years.
