Takes Top Prize, Most Golds at Conn. Awards
BOSTON-Cronin & Co. dominated the Advertising Club of Connecticut's 45th annual awards show last week, taking home the most gold prizes, best of show honors and a special award for best art direction.
About 350 industry professionals attended the ceremony, held Wednesday at the West Hartford Town Hall.
The Glastonbury, Conn., shop grabbed best of show kudos for a humorous TV campaign for the Connecticut State Lottery's instant games. One ad focuses on a researcher who places his arm in a tank of hungry mosquitoes, their bites eventually spelling out the name of the game: "Scratchmania."
"They put the energy back into the lottery. They were just different enough [and] they were very funny," said Tom Chandler, creative director at Hurley Chandler & Chaffer, Providence, R.I., and one of seven judges who evaluated work for the show.
Contributing to the best of show entry were creative director Steve Wolfberg, copywriters Greg Edwards and Bob Dennis, and art directors Maureen Gawron, Alex Jesudowich and Wayne Raicik.
All told, Cronin won six gold prizes on the night: four for its lottery campaign and one each for Mystic Aquarium and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Another lottery ad, titled "Seven Wonders," was honored with the Gold Brush for art direction, with Jesudowich singled out for kudos.
Mintz & Hoke, Avon, Conn., won the copywriting Gold Pen for a YoFarms radio ad scripted by John Pugmire.
